Teen mental health issues overlooked

boy-african-africa-child-47080.jpegA survey of more than 10,000 American teenagers has shown that more than half of adolescents with psychiatric disorders receive no treatment of any sort. The research also notes that when treatment does occur, the providers are rarely mental health specialists.

The study, published in the journal Psychiatric Services, was conducted by Duke University professor of psychology, E. Jane Costello.

Rates of treatment varied greatly for different conditions. Adolescents with diagnoses of ADHD, conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder received mental health care more than 70 percent of the time.

In contrast, teens suffering from phobias or anxiety disorders were the least likely to be treated. Results also varied greatly by race, with black youths significantly less likely to be treated for mental disorders than white youths.

  1. This is very interesting! I think it’s mostly to do with a massive lack of knowledge- as a teen I was always taught so much about keeping physically fit but nothing about keeping mentally fit (it’s just as important!) because I knew nothing about these issues I never thought to go to the doctor about my anxiety until it pushed me to breaking point. It’s important we raise awareness and let young people know about mental health.
